YaST Partitioner
YaST Partitioner, also known as the YaST Expert Partitioner, is a comprehensive and advanced disk management tool included as part of the YaST (Yet another Setup Tool) system administration suite developed by SUSE. Within the Active@ LiveCD environment, it provides a powerful and flexible alternative to graphical partition editors such as GParted and KDE Partition Manager, offering a broader range of storage management capabilities that extend well beyond basic partition creation and deletion, making it particularly well suited for complex storage configurations found in enterprise and server environments.
The main interface presents a detailed tree view of all detected storage devices and their associated components in the left panel, organized hierarchically by device type. The tree structure includes physical hard drives and solid-state drives, individual partitions, RAID arrays, LVM volume groups and logical volumes, network storage mappings, and encrypted LUKS devices. This comprehensive hierarchical overview allows you to navigate and manage even the most complex multi-device storage configurations from a single unified interface, without the need to switch between multiple tools.
YaST Partitioner supports the full range of standard partition management operations, including creating, deleting, resizing, moving, and formatting partitions across a wide variety of file system types such as NTFS, FAT32, exFAT, ext2, ext3, ext4, XFS, Btrfs, and swap. In addition to these standard operations, YaST Partitioner provides advanced capabilities that set it apart from simpler partition management tools. It supports the creation and management of software RAID arrays at levels 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, allowing you to configure redundant or high-performance storage configurations directly from within the Active@ LiveCD environment.
LVM (Logical Volume Manager) support is another key strength of YaST Partitioner. It allows you to create and manage LVM physical volumes, volume groups, and logical volumes, providing a flexible and dynamic approach to storage allocation that is commonly used in Linux server environments. Logical volumes can be created, resized, and deleted independently of the underlying physical disk layout, making storage management significantly more flexible than traditional partition-based approaches. Thin provisioning and snapshots are also supported for compatible LVM configurations.
YaST Partitioner also provides full support for LUKS (Linux Unified Key Setup) encrypted devices, allowing you to create new encrypted partitions or volumes and manage existing ones. Encrypted devices can be configured with a passphrase or keyfile, and can be integrated with LVM or RAID configurations for a layered approach to storage security. All changes made within YaST Partitioner are applied only after explicit confirmation, giving you the opportunity to review the full list of planned modifications before any changes are written to disk, minimizing the risk of accidental data loss or configuration errors.
