Creating a Raw Disk Image

A Raw Disk Image is a mirror copy of an entire logical drive or physical device, stored as a set of files. It is strongly recommended to create a Raw Disk Image of a drive containing deleted files before attempting recovery, provided sufficient space is available on another drive. If something goes wrong during the recovery attempt, the deleted files and folders can still be recovered from the Raw Disk Image.

Depending on the disk image creation settings, a Raw Disk Image consists of a configuration file with a .DIM extension and either a single file or a set of file chunks with extensions .000, .001, .002, and so on, each with a maximum size of 2 GB.

Important:

Do not save a Raw Disk Image to the same disk you are backing up. The target location must always be on a separate drive.

To create a Raw Disk Image:

  1. In the Active@ Partition Recovery workspace, right-click a logical drive or physical device.
  2. Choose Create Disk Image to open the dialog box.
  3. In the Places area, select another physical device or logical drive as the destination.
  4. Browse to the folder where you want to save the disk image.
  5. In the Name field, enter a descriptive name for the disk image file.
  6. Click Save. A progress bar appears.
Monitor the progress and wait while the drive contents are copied to the new location. You can cancel the process at any time by clicking Stop.
